In AI search, two things tell you whether a brand is winning: how often it’s mentioned, and how often it’s cited as a source. They sound similar. They’re not. Here’s the difference, why both matter, and how to track them.
What is a mention?
A mention is when an AI model names your brand in its answer. It can be a direct name drop (“Trackbase tracks AI visibility”) or a clear reference to your product or service. Mentions tell you about presence: how often and how prominently you appear in AI responses.
Mentions are about visibility. They answer the question: are people hearing about us at all?
What is a citation?
A citation is when an AI model uses your brand as a source. This usually includes a link, a reference or an explicit attribution to your website or content. The model is telling the user: this is where the information came from.
Citations are about authority. They answer the question: do AI models trust us enough to back up their answers?
Mention vs citation: a quick example
A user asks ChatGPT: “What are the best tools to track AI search visibility?”
ChatGPT answers: “Several tools exist in this space, including Trackbase, which monitors brand mentions across major AI platforms. According to trackbase.ai, the platform tracks 11 AI models with daily data refreshes.”
In this answer:
“Trackbase” appears twice — those are mentions
“According to trackbase.ai” with a reference is a citation
Same brand, two different signals. Both count, in different ways.
Why both matter
Mentions drive awareness. The more often AI models name your brand in relevant answers, the more buyers hear about you in the moment they’re researching. High mention volume signals you’re part of the conversation.
Citations drive trust. When an AI model points to your content as a source, it’s a vote of authority. Citations also tend to compound: content that gets cited once gets cited more, because models reinforce sources they’ve used before.
A brand with high mentions but no citations is being talked about but not trusted. A brand with citations but few mentions is trusted but not visible. You want both.
How Trackbase tracks both
Trackbase separates mentions and citations in its real-time mentions feed and dashboard. You see:
How often your brand is named (mentions)
How often your content is sourced (citations)
Which platforms cite you most
Which competitors get cited where you don’t
That breakdown turns a vague “are we visible?” question into a precise “where do we have visibility, and where do we have authority?”
Mentions show you exist in AI answers. Citations show you’re trusted. Track both, balance both, and you’ll see exactly where to invest next. Trackbase gives you the breakdown: start a free trial and see where you stand.
