What is Agentic Commerce?
Agentic commerce is buying and selling in which an AI agent does part of the shopping for a person: it researches options, compares products and prices and, when allowed, completes the purchase. The shopper sets the goal and the limits, and the agent handles the steps in between.
It goes a step further than asking an assistant for recommendations. Instead of returning a list of links, an agent can check stock, apply preferences such as budget or delivery time, fill a cart and hand over to checkout. Open standards such as the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), developed by OpenAI and Stripe, define how agents, merchants and payment providers exchange product data, orders and payment details.
Why agentic commerce matters for your brand
When an agent builds the shortlist, your product page is no longer the first thing a buyer sees. The agent decides which products to consider based on the data it can read and trust: product feeds, prices, stock, reviews and the way other sources describe you. A brand that is missing or poorly described at that stage never makes it to the final comparison.
The details are still moving. Several AI companies, payment networks and commerce platforms are testing their own approaches, and in many cases the payment still happens on the merchant's own site. Product discovery is shifting first, as our article on why AI search engines are becoming purchase channels explains.
How to prepare for agentic commerce
Keep product data complete and accurate: titles, prices, availability, shipping costs, return terms and identifiers such as GTIN.
Mark up product pages with structured data and keep your product feeds in sync with the site.
Make sure AI crawlers can read your product and category pages without running JavaScript.
Earn reviews and third-party coverage, because agents compare what others say, not only what you say.
Track whether AI assistants recommend your products for the prompts your buyers use.
For webshops, Trackbase's ChatGPT Shopping tracking follows the visibility of your products in ChatGPT Shopping.
Examples of Agentic Commerce
A shopper asks an assistant to find running shoes under 120 euros that can be delivered before Saturday, and the agent narrows the choice to three pairs.
A Dutch bicycle webshop publishes a detailed product feed so that shopping agents see correct prices, frame sizes and stock levels.
A B2B buyer lets an agent reorder office supplies from approved vendors within a monthly budget.
A kitchen appliance brand sees assistants recommend a competitor's blender, finds that its own product pages lack clear specifications and fixes the data.
Frequently asked questions
Is agentic commerce the same as ChatGPT Shopping?
No. ChatGPT Shopping is one product experience: product results inside ChatGPT answers. Agentic commerce is the broader shift in which AI agents research, compare and sometimes buy on behalf of people, across many platforms. Shopping results are an early form of it, and protocols such as ACP aim to let agents go further, from discovery to checkout.
Can AI agents already buy products for consumers?
In some cases, yes, but it is early. Several platforms have launched or tested purchases inside AI assistants, typically with the shopper confirming the final order. Approaches are still changing, and many flows still send the buyer to the merchant's own checkout. The bigger shift today is in discovery: agents increasingly decide which products a buyer sees first.
What should a webshop do first to prepare for agentic commerce?
Start with your product data. Make sure titles, prices, availability, shipping and return terms are complete and consistent across your site, structured data and product feeds. Then check that AI crawlers can read your product pages and that trusted review sites describe your products well. Finally, track which prompts lead AI assistants to your products or to competitors.
