What is AI dark traffic?
AI dark traffic is website traffic that AI assistants cause but analytics tools cannot attribute to them. The visit happens because someone saw your brand or a link to your site in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or another assistant, yet your reports file it under direct traffic, organic search or another channel.
The term borrows from dark social: visits from links shared in messaging apps or email, which arrive without a referrer and end up as direct traffic. AI dark traffic works the same way. Links opened from AI apps can arrive without a referrer. Users copy a URL from an answer into their browser. And many people read a brand name in an answer, then search for it or type the address themselves.
Google adds another layer: it has said that clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the regular Web search data in Search Console. That traffic is not dark in the strict sense, but standard reports do not separate it from classic organic clicks.
Why AI dark traffic matters
If you judge AI search only by the AI referral traffic you can see, you will underestimate its impact. A brand that AI answers recommend often may see little labeled AI traffic but a steady rise in direct visits, branded searches and demo requests. Without accounting for dark traffic, that growth gets credited to other channels, and your AI visibility work looks less effective than it is.
It also means site analytics alone cannot tell you where you stand. Many AI answers never lead to a click at all, which is why zero-click search and dark traffic are two sides of the same measurement problem.
How to measure AI dark traffic
Create a custom channel group in GA4 for known AI referrers such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com, so the visible part is reported correctly. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links from its search results, which helps label those visits.
Watch direct traffic to deep pages: people rarely type a long URL by hand, so spikes there often point to copied or app-opened links.
Track branded search volume and compare it with the trend in your AI visibility.
Add a “How did you hear about us?” field to forms, with AI assistants as one of the options.
Measure the source itself with prompt tracking: once you know how often AI answers mention you, you can relate that to the traffic you cannot label.
The Trackbase blog explains why you can't measure AI search in Google Analytics and what to track instead.
Examples of AI dark traffic
A B2B payroll software vendor sees direct traffic to one deep comparison page rise sharply after ChatGPT starts recommending that page, while labeled AI referrals barely change.
A Dutch bicycle webshop notices more branded Google searches in the weeks after it starts appearing in Perplexity answers about e-bike shops.
A growing number of leads on a consultancy's contact form answer “an AI assistant” when asked how they found the company, although GA4 shows almost no AI sessions.
A travel site gains clicks from Google AI Overviews that appear in Search Console as ordinary web search traffic.
Frequently asked questions
Why does AI traffic show up as direct traffic in GA4?
Analytics tools identify a source through the referrer or campaign tags attached to a visit. When a link is opened from an app that strips the referrer, copied from an answer into a browser or typed in after someone read your brand name, no source information is left. GA4 then classifies the session as direct, even though an AI assistant caused the visit.
How much of my traffic is AI dark traffic?
You cannot measure it exactly, because by definition it carries no AI label. You can estimate it by combining signals: more direct traffic to deep pages, growth in branded search, self-reported answers in forms and the trend in your AI visibility. When those rise together while labeled AI referrals stay flat, a meaningful share of your AI impact is probably hidden.
Is AI dark traffic the same as zero-click search?
No, but they are related. Zero-click search means the user gets an answer without visiting any site. AI dark traffic means the user does visit your site because of an AI answer, but your analytics cannot tell. Both explain why site analytics undercount AI search, and both are reasons to measure visibility in the AI answers themselves.
