What are Google AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of some Google search results. Instead of only listing pages, Google writes a short answer to the query and adds links to the web pages it used as sources.
AI Overviews are the successor of the Search Generative Experience (SGE), Google's earlier experiment with generative answers in Search. Google rolled them out broadly in 2024 and has since made them available in many countries and languages, including Dutch. They are part of regular Google Search, so there is nothing to sign up for.
Not every query triggers an AI Overview. They tend to appear for questions that need some explanation or comparison, and less often for navigational searches such as a brand name.
Why Google AI Overviews matter for your visibility
An AI Overview sits above the classic organic results, so it is often the first thing a searcher reads. If the summary answers the question, fewer people scroll down or click, which is one of the drivers of zero-click search. A first position in the organic results no longer guarantees the most attention.
At the same time, AI Overviews create a new place to be seen. The summary can name your brand, recommend your product or cite your page as a source. An AI citation puts your site in the most prominent spot on the page. If you are left out, a competitor shapes the answer instead.
How to appear in Google AI Overviews
There is no special markup or opt-in for AI Overviews. Google selects sources from pages it has indexed, so solid SEO remains the base. On top of that:
Answer the question in the first sentences of a section, then add depth and evidence.
Use clear headings that mirror the questions people search for.
Keep facts, prices and specifications current and consistent across your site.
Earn mentions on third-party sources that cover your topic, such as review sites and comparison articles.
Track which queries in your market trigger an AI Overview and which domains get cited.
Blocking the Google-Extended token in robots.txt does not keep your pages out of AI Overviews, because they are part of Google Search. With Google AI Overview tracking, Trackbase shows daily whether your brand is mentioned or cited, alongside ten other AI models.
Examples of Google AI Overviews
A search for "how often should I service my e-bike" shows a short maintenance summary that cites a Dutch bicycle webshop's care guide and two cycling blogs.
The query "best payroll software for small businesses" triggers an overview that names four vendors and links to comparison articles rather than to the vendors' own sites.
A B2B buyer searching "what is SOC 2" gets a definition drawn from a security vendor's glossary page, with that page listed as a source.
A search for the name of a local bakery chain shows no AI Overview at all, only the regular results and a map.
Frequently asked questions
Can I opt out of Google AI Overviews?
Not with a separate setting. AI Overviews are part of Google Search, so blocking Google-Extended in robots.txt does not keep your pages out. Google's snippet controls, such as nosnippet, also apply to AI Overviews, but they limit your regular search snippets as well. For most brands, being cited in the overview is a better goal than staying out of it.
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks to my website?
They can. When the summary answers the question well enough, some searchers stop there instead of clicking a result. The impact varies by query and industry, so track both sides: your organic clicks in Search Console and whether your brand is mentioned or cited in the overview itself.
How is an AI Overview different from a featured snippet?
A featured snippet quotes a passage from one web page. An AI Overview is a newly written summary that can combine information from several sources and link to all of them. That means you can be cited next to competitors in the same overview, and the wording of the answer is Google's, not yours.
