What is AI SEO?
AI SEO is search engine optimization adapted to AI-powered search, so your pages are found, understood and used in AI-generated results such as Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT search and Perplexity. It keeps the SEO foundations and adds a new goal: being quoted, cited and recommended inside the answer, not only ranked below it.
The term is used in two ways. Most often it means optimizing for AI search, which is how this glossary uses it. It can also mean using AI tools to do SEO work, such as clustering keywords, drafting briefs or writing meta descriptions. Both are legitimate, but they solve different problems, so agree on the meaning before a project starts.
Compared with GEO, AI SEO stays closer to an SEO team's daily work: technical health, content and links, now judged by how AI systems use them as well as by rankings.
Why AI SEO matters
Search results are changing shape. AI summaries now appear above the organic results for many queries. Conversational modes answer follow-up questions, and assistants such as ChatGPT search the web themselves. A page can keep its ranking and still receive fewer clicks when the answer is already given on the results page.
Much of the groundwork carries over. Many AI search features retrieve pages from a search index before writing an answer, so crawlable, fast and well-structured pages remain the entry ticket. What changes is the scorecard: citations and brand mentions now sit next to rankings and clicks.
How to adapt your SEO for AI search
Keep the technical base solid. Put important content in the HTML, keep pages indexable and make sure AI crawlers are not blocked by accident in robots.txt or a firewall.
Cover questions, not only keywords. Google says AI Mode splits a question into subtopics and runs many searches at once, so pages that also answer a buyer's follow-up questions have more chances to be used.
Add structured data. Schema markup for your organization, products and articles helps machines connect facts to the right entity.
Build authority beyond your site. Reviews, expert quotes and digital PR influence which sources AI systems trust.
Measure AI results separately. Rank trackers and web analytics show only part of the picture, because many AI answers produce no click at all.
The key differences are explained in AI visibility vs SEO. To see how AI systems actually read your site, Trackbase Crawler Analytics shows which AI crawlers visit and which pages they read.
Examples of AI SEO
An electronics webshop discovers that its product specifications load through JavaScript and moves them into the server-rendered HTML, where AI crawlers can read them.
A travel blog splits its long destination guides into clear sections with question headings, so AI Overviews can use a single relevant passage.
An SEO agency adds AI search checks to its monthly audit: robots.txt rules for AI crawlers, schema coverage and brand mentions in ChatGPT and Perplexity.
A B2B software company uses AI tools to cluster thousands of keywords into topics. That is the other meaning of AI SEO: AI as an assistant for SEO work.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI SEO the same as GEO?
They overlap but start from different angles. AI SEO starts from search engine optimization and extends it to AI-powered results, so it stays close to technical SEO, content and links. GEO starts from the generated answer and also covers brand mentions, sentiment and third-party sources. Many teams use the terms interchangeably and run them as one program.
Do I need a separate AI SEO strategy?
Usually not a separate strategy, but an extended one. Keep your SEO foundations, then add goals and checks for AI search: AI crawler access, structured data, answer-ready content, presence on trusted third-party sites and regular measurement of how AI assistants mention and cite your brand. Assign clear ownership, because these tasks often fall between SEO, content and PR.
Can AI tools do my SEO for me?
AI tools can speed up many SEO tasks, such as keyword clustering, content briefs, meta descriptions and technical checks. They still need human review, because they can produce generic or incorrect output. Using AI as an assistant is sensible. Publishing unedited AI text at scale risks thin pages that neither search engines nor AI assistants want to cite.
