What is Mention Rate?
Mention rate is the percentage of tracked prompts in which an AI assistant names your brand in its answer. It measures the most basic form of AI visibility: are you in the answer at all?
The formula: mention rate = prompts where your brand is named ÷ all tracked prompts × 100. If you track 40 prompts in ChatGPT and your brand appears in 14 of the answers, your mention rate on ChatGPT is 35 percent. When prompts run daily, count answers instead: answers that name you ÷ all answers collected in the period. You can calculate it per model, per prompt group or across everything you track.
Mention rate is also called presence rate. It counts an AI brand mention once per answer, however often the name appears, and it ignores links. Whether AI assistants use your content as a source is measured separately with citation rate.
Why Mention Rate matters
When a buyer asks an AI assistant for recommendations, the answer is the shortlist. A brand that is missing from it has no chance of being chosen at that moment, however strong its website is. That makes mention rate on unbranded category prompts the closest thing AI search has to shortlist inclusion.
It is also the easiest metric to explain and the first one to act on. A low rate on prompts where competitors do appear points straight to missing content, missing third-party coverage or technical barriers for AI crawlers.
How to measure and improve Mention Rate
Measure it on unbranded category prompts. Prompts that include your name almost always mention you and inflate the number.
Sample repeatedly. Answers vary between runs, so collect daily data and look at weekly averages.
Compare per model to find the platforms where you are weakest.
List the prompts where competitors appear and you do not, then publish clear answer-first pages and earn coverage on the sources AI models cite for those questions.
Read mention rate together with share of voice and sentiment: being named often but negatively is not a win.
Trackbase records mentions for every prompt and model in its prompt tracking. The article 7 GEO metrics that actually matter shows how presence rate fits into a weekly report.
Examples of Mention Rate
A B2B payroll software vendor appears in 9 of 30 category prompts on Gemini, a mention rate of 30 percent, compared with 60 percent on Perplexity.
A Dutch bicycle webshop raises its mention rate for e-bike prompts from 15 to 40 percent in two months after adding detailed buying guides.
A law firm measures a 90 percent mention rate, then realizes most of its prompts contain its own name and rebuilds the set around unbranded questions.
A software brand is named in half of all answers but almost always last, so it shifts its focus from mention rate to position.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between mention rate and citation rate?
Mention rate counts answers in which your brand is named. Citation rate counts answers in which your website or content is used and linked as a source. A mention signals visibility, a citation signals authority. You can have a high mention rate with few citations, for instance when models know your brand from reviews but do not use your own pages.
What is a good mention rate?
It depends on your category, the number of competitors and how your prompts are phrased, so there is no universal benchmark. Compare your rate with direct competitors on the same unbranded prompts and models, and watch the trend. A rising rate on commercially important prompts says more than a high rate on easy, branded questions.
Does a brand mentioned twice in one answer count twice?
Not for mention rate. It measures the share of answers that name you, so each answer counts once, however many times your name appears in it. How prominently you appear inside an answer is captured by other metrics, such as average position and sentiment, which together show whether a mention is a real recommendation.
