What is Citation Rate?
Citation rate is the percentage of tracked AI answers that use your website or content as a source, usually shown as a link or reference next to the answer. Where mention rate tells you whether AI assistants name you, citation rate tells you whether they trust your content enough to back up their answers with it.
The formula: citation rate = answers that cite your domain ÷ all tracked answers × 100. It is also worth tracking per page, so you can see exactly which URLs earn citations and which are ignored.
Citations mainly appear in assistants that search the web while answering, such as Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT with search. An AI citation can also point to your page without your brand being named in the text, which is why mentions and citations are tracked separately.
Why Citation Rate matters
A citation signals authority: a model read your page, judged it useful and showed it to the user as evidence. Citations also create a path to your site. AI referral traffic starts with someone clicking a cited link, while a mention without a link gives the reader nothing to click.
Citation rate is also the metric your own content influences most directly. Pages with clear answers, specific facts, dates and a logical structure tend to be cited more often, and the list of cited URLs shows which kind of content to create more of. For the difference in practice, read mentions vs citations.
How to improve your Citation Rate
Find the prompts where competitors or third-party sites are cited and you are not.
Answer those questions directly on your own pages, in the first sentences under a clear heading, following answer-first content principles.
Add concrete facts, named sources, dates and author information so each page is easy to verify.
Make sure AI crawlers can reach your pages and read the content in the raw HTML.
Keep important pages up to date and show a visible last-updated date.
For the prompts you follow with Prompt Tracking, Trackbase separates citations from mentions and shows which platforms cite you most and which competitors get cited where you do not.
Examples of Citation Rate
A B2B payroll software vendor is mentioned in 40 percent of answers but cited in only 5 percent, because models rely on review sites instead of its own pages.
A Dutch bicycle webshop publishes a detailed guide to e-bike batteries and sees that URL cited in a growing share of maintenance prompts on Perplexity.
A health publisher sees its citation rate drop after a redesign that loads the main text with JavaScript, which many AI crawlers do not execute.
A consultancy discovers that one research page earns most of its citations and uses it as the template for new content.
Frequently asked questions
How is citation rate calculated?
Divide the number of tracked AI answers that cite your domain as a source by the total number of tracked answers, then multiply by 100. Calculate it per model as well as overall, because assistants differ in how often they show sources. Looking at citations per URL tells you which of your pages AI models find most useful.
Why do AI answers mention my brand without citing my website?
Models often describe brands based on what other sources say about them, such as review platforms, comparison articles and news coverage. Their training data plays a role too. In those cases your brand is named, but another site gets the citation. Clear, factual pages on your own domain give models a reason to cite you directly.
Can a website be cited without the brand being mentioned?
Yes. An AI assistant can use a page as a source for a general fact, such as a statistic or a definition, without naming the company behind it in the answer text. That still counts toward citation rate and still builds authority, but it will not show up in mention-based metrics. This is why the two are tracked separately.
