Product Carousel

Product carousels are rows of product cards with images, prices, ratings and store links that AI assistants show for questions with buying intent.

What is a Product Carousel?

A product carousel is a row of visual product cards that an AI assistant shows in response to a question with shopping intent. Each card typically shows a product image, name, price and rating, with links to one or more merchants that sell it. Opening a card shows more detail, such as a review summary and merchants with their prices.

In ChatGPT, carousels are the most visible part of ChatGPT Shopping. They can replace a long text answer or sit next to it: the text explains what to look for, while the cards show concrete options. Perplexity and Google AI Mode show similar visual product results.

Why Product Carousels matter for e-commerce brands

A carousel narrows a whole category down to a handful of products. For the shopper, the cards on screen are the shortlist, and a product that is missing is unlikely to be considered in that conversation. It is one reason why AI search engines are becoming purchase channels, not just research tools.

Position matters too. The first cards are seen without scrolling, so climbing from sixth to second place can matter almost as much as getting in. And because OpenAI says its product results are selected independently and are not ads, you cannot buy a spot. Carousels are an early form of agentic commerce, in which AI decides which products a buyer sees first.

How to get into Product Carousels and track your position

OpenAI describes the factors but no exact ranking. A product appears when ChatGPT judges it relevant to what the shopper wants, taking into account the question and context such as memory. Structured product data from merchants and third-party providers, such as price and description, counts too, as does other content such as reviews. In practice:

  • Keep titles, prices, availability, images and GTINs complete and identical across your site, feeds and structured data.

  • Share a product feed with OpenAI, directly or through your commerce platform, so your catalog is fully represented.

  • Describe the attributes people ask for, such as size, material, use case and compatibility, so your products match specific prompts.

  • Earn reviews and a place in comparison content, since third-party content influences what is shown.

  • Track a fixed set of shopping prompts and record which products appear, in which position, at what price and from which merchant.

Carousels change with wording, context and time, so one test says little. Trackbase's ChatGPT Shopping tracking follows your products in ChatGPT Shopping carousels: their positions, prices, tags and competitors.

Examples of Product Carousels

  • A shopper asks for "noise-canceling headphones for long flights under 200 euros" and ChatGPT shows five models with prices, ratings and store links, plus a short note on the trade-offs.

  • A Dutch bicycle webshop tracks 25 shopping prompts and sees a competitor's cargo bike take over the first position after a wave of new reviews.

  • A sporting goods webshop sees its running shoes shown with last month's sale price, because the old price is still in its structured data, and fixes the mismatch.

  • A furniture brand that sells through its own webshop and two marketplaces checks which merchant links the carousel shows for its best-selling office chair.

Frequently asked questions

Which AI assistants show product carousels?

ChatGPT shows them for many shopping questions as part of ChatGPT Shopping. Perplexity and Google AI Mode have introduced their own visual product results as well. Availability and design differ per platform and country, and they keep changing. Check the assistants your customers actually use, with the prompts they would type, instead of assuming that one platform behaves like another.

Can I pay to appear in a product carousel?

Not in the organic product results in ChatGPT. OpenAI says they are selected independently and are not ads. The ads OpenAI has started testing in ChatGPT are labeled and shown separately from the answer. A place in the carousel therefore depends on your product data, your reviews and how well your products match the prompt: things you can influence but not buy.

What determines the order of products in a carousel?

OpenAI has not published an exact ranking. It says ChatGPT considers how relevant a product is to the shopper's intent, including the question and context such as memory, along with structured product data like price and description and third-party content such as reviews. Because context differs per user and conversation, track your position across many runs instead of expecting a fixed rank.
