What is query fan-out?
Query fan-out is a technique in which an AI search system breaks one question into several related sub-queries, runs those searches at the same time and combines the results into a single answer. Instead of one search for the exact question, the system explores the subtopics a good answer needs.
Google says Google AI Mode and AI Overviews may use query fan-out to run several related searches on different subtopics and sources. Ask "what is the best e-bike for a hilly 20 km commute" and the system might also look up motor power on climbs, battery range, comfort for daily riding and recent reviews, then write one answer from all of it.
Other AI assistants work in a similar way. OpenAI says ChatGPT search typically rewrites a prompt into one or more targeted search queries. Deep Research modes take the idea further by running many searches over several minutes before writing a cited report.
Why query fan-out matters for AI visibility
With query fan-out, the answer is built from sources that rank for the sub-queries, not only for the original question. A page that ranks well for "best e-bike" can be missing from the answer, while a detailed guide about "e-bike battery range in winter" gets cited because it wins one of the hidden sub-queries. Google says the technique helps it surface a broader range of supporting pages.
This changes what ranking means. You compete on the whole cluster of questions around a topic, including comparisons, prices, specifications, reviews and use cases. Brands that cover a subject in depth, often described as topical authority, have more chances to be picked up somewhere in the fan-out.
How to optimize for query fan-out
Map the sub-questions. For each important prompt, list what a thorough answer would need: criteria, prices, alternatives, risks and local details.
Answer each one clearly. Give every sub-question its own section or page, with a direct answer in the first lines.
Make passages self-contained. A section may be retrieved on its own, so name the product and context in it.
Get the basics right. Google says only pages that are indexed and can be shown with a snippet in Search are eligible as supporting links in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Close the gaps. Find subtopics where competitors are cited and you are not, and build that content first.
A content gap analysis for AI visibility is a practical way to find those gaps. Trackbase tracks your prompts daily in Google AI Mode and 10 other AI models.
Examples of query fan-out
"Best CRM for a small agency" fans out into searches about CRM pricing for small teams, project management features, integrations with accounting tools and recent reviews.
A Dutch bicycle webshop's article on "e-bike battery range in winter" is cited in an AI Mode answer about commuter e-bikes, although the shop does not rank for "best commuter e-bike".
A B2B payroll software vendor notices that AI answers about "payroll software for startups" often cite pages about stock options and contractor payments, and adds guides on both.
A travel question such as "a weekend in Porto with kids in March" splits into weather, family-friendly hotels, activities and transport from the airport.
Frequently asked questions
Which AI search tools use query fan-out?
Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews may use query fan-out. OpenAI says ChatGPT search typically rewrites a prompt into one or more targeted searches, and other AI assistants that browse the web work in a similar way, although most describe their methods in little detail. Deep Research modes use the same idea at a larger scale.
How do I find the sub-queries AI uses for my topic?
Some assistants show the searches they ran, but most of the fan-out happens out of sight, so you usually have to infer it. Look at the sources an AI answer cites and the subtopics it covers, check related questions in Google and ask an assistant which factors matter when choosing in your category. Repeat this for your most important prompts.
Does query fan-out make traditional SEO less important?
No, it makes SEO broader. The sub-queries are still searches, and the pages that rank for them are the ones AI Overviews and AI Mode can draw on. Instead of focusing on one head keyword, you need solid rankings and clear answers across the full set of questions around your topic, including comparisons, costs and specific use cases.
