Server-Side Rendering (SSR)

Server-side rendering (SSR) means the server builds a page's complete HTML before sending it, so browsers and crawlers receive the content right away.

What is Server-Side Rendering (SSR)?

Server-side rendering (SSR) means the server builds the complete HTML of a page before sending it to the browser. Whoever requests the page, a visitor or a crawler, immediately receives the text, links and data without having to run JavaScript first.

The alternative is client-side rendering (CSR), common in single-page applications. There, the server sends a nearly empty HTML shell plus JavaScript, and the browser builds the content. In between sit static site generation, where pages are rendered once at build time, and prerendering. Modern frameworks such as Next.js, Nuxt and SvelteKit support SSR and static generation, then add interactivity in the browser through a step called hydration.

Why server-side rendering matters for AI visibility

Googlebot can render JavaScript, but many AI crawlers read only the raw HTML and do not execute JavaScript. On a client-side rendered site, they may see little more than a loading message. Product details, prices, reviews and even structured data added later by scripts can be missing from what they collect.

Rendering is a basic condition for citability: AI search crawlers cannot cite content they cannot read, and training crawlers cannot learn from it. With SSR or static pages, the content is in the first response, so every crawler gets the same complete page as your visitors.

How to check and fix rendering for AI crawlers

  1. Open "view page source" in your browser, not the element inspector, and check whether your main text, prices and FAQs are in the HTML.

  2. Fetch the page with a simple tool such as curl, or disable JavaScript, and see what remains.

  3. Prioritize the pages that matter most for AI answers: product, pricing, comparison and documentation pages.

  4. Move those templates to SSR or static generation, or use prerendering if a rebuild is not feasible.

  5. Check that important links are real anchor tags in the HTML, so crawlers can follow them.

After the change, confirm that AI crawlers actually fetch the pages. Trackbase's Crawler Analytics shows which AI crawlers visit your site and what they read.

Examples of Server-Side Rendering (SSR)

  • A B2B software vendor finds that its React-based pricing page shows only an empty container in the page source, and moves it to server-side rendering.

  • A Dutch bicycle webshop renders product names, prices and stock on the server, while filters and the photo carousel still load with JavaScript.

  • A publisher switches its blog to static generation, so every article is complete HTML the moment it goes live.

  • A SaaS company prerenders its feature pages after noticing that AI answers describe its product with outdated details from third-party sites instead of its own pages.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need server-side rendering for SEO and AI visibility?

Not necessarily, but your important content needs to be in the HTML the server returns. Server-side rendering is one way to achieve that; static generation and prerendering are others. Googlebot can render JavaScript, but many AI crawlers do not, so a site that relies fully on client-side rendering risks being partly invisible to AI systems.

What is the difference between SSR and client-side rendering?

With server-side rendering, the server sends a complete HTML page, so the content is there before any JavaScript runs. With client-side rendering, the server sends a mostly empty page and the browser builds the content with JavaScript. Client-side rendering can feel fast in web apps, but crawlers that do not execute JavaScript may miss the content entirely.

How do I know whether AI crawlers can see my content?

Check the raw HTML: use your browser's "view page source" or fetch the page with a tool such as curl, and look for your main text, prices and structured data. If they are missing, crawlers that do not execute JavaScript cannot see them either. Server logs or crawler analytics then show whether AI crawlers actually visit those pages.
