What is Citability?
Citability is how easy it is for an AI system to find, understand, trust and quote a passage from your content. A highly citable page gives clear, self-contained answers that a model can lift into its response and attribute to you as a source.
Citability is a property of your content, while an AI citation is the outcome. Improving citability raises the odds that your pages are chosen when an AI assistant looks for evidence to support an answer.
It works at the level of passages rather than whole pages. Retrieval systems often split pages into smaller chunks and select the pieces that best match a question, so every section needs to make sense on its own, without the paragraphs around it.
Why citability matters for AI visibility
AI assistants that search the web look at many candidate pages but quote only a few. Pages that answer the question directly, state facts plainly and show who wrote them make that choice easy. Pages full of vague claims, sales language or content that only loads through scripts are easier to skip, even when they rank well.
Citability also protects accuracy. When the clearest statement of your pricing, features or policies is on your own site, models are more likely to repeat your version instead of an outdated description from somewhere else.
How to improve citability
Lead with the answer. Write answer-first content: a direct one- or two-sentence answer under each question heading.
Write self-contained sentences. Repeat the subject instead of writing "it" or "this", so a quoted sentence still makes sense out of context.
Be specific. Use concrete numbers, names, dates and conditions, and link to the source of any claim you did not produce yourself.
Show expertise and accountability. Author names, credentials and clear publication dates support E-E-A-T.
Make the page machine-readable. Serve the main content in the HTML, for example with server-side rendering, and add structured data that describes the page and its author.
The guide on how to get cited by AI covers the off-site side. For content teams, Trackbase tracks which sources AI models cite in your category, so you can see which formats earn citations.
Examples of citability
A mortgage advisor replaces a vague intro ("every situation is unique") with a direct answer on what determines the maximum mortgage, followed by a worked example.
A SaaS company splits a long feature page into sections with clear headings, so each section explains one feature in sentences that can be quoted on their own.
A webshop moves product specifications out of images and into plain text, so AI crawlers can read and repeat the exact dimensions and materials.
A research agency publishes an annual benchmark with its method, sample size and date stated upfront, which makes it an easy source to cite for questions on that topic.
Frequently asked questions
What makes content citable for AI?
Citable content answers a clear question directly, uses specific facts and still makes sense when a single passage is quoted on its own. Crawlers must be able to read it, and it should show who wrote it and when it was last updated. A site with a track record on the topic also helps. Vague marketing copy scores low on all of these points.
Is citability the same as readability?
No, but they overlap. Readability is about how easy a text is for people to follow. Citability also asks whether a machine can extract a correct, self-contained statement and trust it enough to show it as a source. Short, clear sentences help both, while specific facts, clear attribution and crawlable HTML matter especially for citability.
Can you measure citability?
There is no official score, although some tools estimate it. The practical test is the outcome: track how often AI assistants cite your pages for your key prompts, and compare pages before and after a rewrite. Pages that start earning citations after a change show which improvements work.
