AEO vs GEO vs SEO: What’s the Difference?

SEO targets search engines, AEO targets answer engines, and GEO targets generative AI models. They overlap, but theyre not the same and treating them as one is how you end up invisible in the channels that matter most.

Three acronyms, one goal: getting your brand found. SEO targets search engines, AEO targets answer engines, and GEO targets generative AI models. They overlap, but they’re not the same and treating them as one is how you end up invisible in the channels that matter most.

What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the discipline of ranking pages on traditional search engines like Google and Bing. Success is measured in clicks: rank higher, get more traffic. The playbook is well-known: backlinks, page speed, keyword targeting, technical health.

SEO still works. But fewer people are clicking. Studies from 2024 onward show a sharp rise in zero-click searches, where users get their answer directly from the result page or skip search engines entirely.

What is AEO?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is about being the source that gets quoted when an engine answers a question directly. Think Google’s AI Overviews, featured snippets, or the boxed answers in Bing. AEO rewards content that:

  • Answers a specific question in the first two or three sentences

  • Uses clear headings phrased as questions

  • Includes structured data like FAQ schema

  • Reads as authoritative, not promotional

If SEO is about ranking a page, AEO is about being the answer.

What is GEO?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the newest of the three. It targets large language models like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok and others that synthesize answers from many sources at once. There is often no link, no click, and no obvious feedback loop.

GEO success looks different. Your brand needs to be mentioned, cited or recommended inside an AI-generated answer. That depends on whether the model has been trained on your content, how often your brand appears across the web in the right context, and whether the language used about you is positive.

How they fit together

These disciplines layer rather than compete:

  • SEO gets your pages indexed and ranked

  • AEO gets your content lifted into direct answers

  • GEO gets your brand into AI-synthesised responses

Strong content and authority help all three. But GEO requires a new kind of measurement: tracking where your brand actually shows up across the top 11 AI platforms, which is exactly what Trackbase is built for. SEO, AEO and GEO are three layers of the same shift: people searching less, asking more. Brands that show up across all three are the ones AI will keep recommending.

Trackbase shows you where you stand on the GEO layer, start your free trial and see your AI visibility score today.
