Citation Share

Citation share is the percentage of all source citations in tracked AI answers that point to your domain rather than to other websites.

What is Citation Share?

Citation share is the percentage of all citations in tracked AI answers that point to your domain. Every source link an AI assistant shows counts toward the total, whether it leads to your site, a competitor, a review platform or a news site.

The formula: citation share = citations to your domain ÷ all citations in the tracked answers × 100. If the answers to your prompts contain 500 source links in a month and 40 of them point to your site, your citation share is 8 percent. Count repeated links to one domain within an answer the same way for every domain.

Two related metrics measure something else. Citation rate is the share of answers that cite you at least once, so it counts answers rather than links. AI share of voice counts brand mentions in the answer text, not source links.

Why Citation Share matters

Citations are the evidence behind an AI answer. The domains that hold most of them shape how a topic is explained, which facts get repeated and which brands come across as the authority. If review platforms and one competitor's blog hold half the citations for your key prompts, the assistant tells your category's story in their words, not yours.

Citation share also reveals shifts that citation rate can hide. Your citation rate can stay flat while answers start citing more sources overall, or while a competitor earns several links per answer. Because all shares add up to 100 percent, one domain's gain is another's loss, which makes the metric a natural fit for competitor benchmarking.

How to measure and grow your Citation Share

  1. Track a fixed set of category prompts in the AI models your buyers use, and record every cited URL in every answer.

  2. Group the URLs by domain and calculate the share of each domain, per model and overall.

  3. Study the cited sources behind the largest shares: which pages earn the links, and what do they do better than yours?

  4. Improve or create pages that answer those prompts directly, with specific facts, dates and a clear structure.

  5. Review the trend weekly and per model.

Note that citation share only counts your own domain. A mention on a review site with a large share will not raise it, but it does put your brand inside the sources models rely on. The Trackbase blog explains how to earn mentions on the sources AI models trust. With Prompt Tracking, Trackbase records which sources AI models cite for your prompts, including where competitors are cited instead of you.

Examples of Citation Share

  • A Dutch bicycle webshop is cited in 30 percent of answers about e-bike maintenance, yet its citation share is only 3 percent, because those answers link to about ten sources each.

  • A B2B payroll software vendor finds that two review platforms hold more than a third of all citations for its category prompts, while its own domain holds 6 percent.

  • A software company sees a competitor's help center take a quarter of the citations for integration prompts, and rebuilds its own documentation around the same questions.

  • An insurance comparison site raises its citation share on Perplexity after publishing a clearly structured, regularly updated guide for each policy type.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between citation share and citation rate?

Citation rate counts answers: the share of tracked answers that cite your domain at least once. Citation share counts links: your domain's part of all citations in those answers. When answers cite many sources, you can have a solid citation rate and a small citation share at the same time. Tracking both shows whether you are present and how much of the evidence you own.

How is citation share different from AI share of voice?

AI share of voice measures brand mentions in the text of AI answers, compared with the mentions of competitors. Citation share measures source links and includes every cited domain, such as review sites, media and reference sites, not only brands. If you are named often but rarely cited, models probably know you from other sources rather than from your own pages.

What is a good citation share?

There is no universal benchmark, because the number of cited sources differs per category, prompt and model. In markets where review platforms, marketplaces and media dominate the answers, even well-known brands may hold a small share. Compare your share with the domains of your direct competitors on the same prompts and models, and focus on the trend rather than a single month.
